Dropper Bar

In both animal and highway fencing, dropper bars (also known as battens, stays, or standards) are critical components used as intermediate supports between main fence posts. They are typically lightweight galvanized steel bars designed to keep line wires correctly spaced and to add structural integrity to the fence without the need for additional heavy posts.

Primary Functions and Uses

  • Maintaining Wire Spacing: The core purpose of a dropper bar is to prevent fence wires from being spread apart by animals or external pressure between widely spaced posts.
  • Shock Load Distribution: Droppers help transfer the shock or pressure from a single wire to all the wires in the fence. This "elastic" or "suspension" effect reduces the risk of overloading and snapping individual wires.
  • Increasing Visibility: They make the fence line more visible to livestock, wildlife, or motorists, reducing the likelihood of accidental collisions.
  • Reducing Sag: By acting as vertical braces, they reduce wire sag over long distances, ensuring the fence remains stock proof and aesthetically straight.
  • Corrosion Resistance: These fittings are often galvanized to resist rust, which is crucial for outdoor installations exposed to weather and moisture.
